The IUP Wind Ensemble is a classical music ensemble that was founded in 1969 at Indiana University of Pennsylvania (IUP). The ensemble is made up of talented musicians who are passionate about creating beautiful music and sharing it with audiences around the world. Over the years, the IUP Wind Ensemble has become one of the most respected and renowned wind ensembles in the United States, thanks to its exceptional performances and numerous awards. The IUP Wind Ensemble was founded by Dr. Jack Stamp, who served as the ensemble's conductor and director for over 20 years. Dr. Stamp is a highly respected composer and conductor who has written numerous works for wind ensembles and orchestras. He is also a sought-after guest conductor and clinician, and has conducted ensembles all over the world. Under Dr. Stamp's leadership, the IUP Wind Ensemble quickly became known for its exceptional musicianship and innovative programming. The IUP Wind Ensemble is made up of approximately 50 musicians, including woodwinds, brass, and percussion. The ensemble is open to all IUP students, regardless of major, and auditions are held at the beginning of each semester. The ensemble rehearses several times a week, and performs several concerts each year, both on and off campus. Over the years, the IUP Wind Ensemble has performed at numerous prestigious venues and events, including the Pennsylvania Music Educators Association (PMEA) State Conference, the College Band Directors National Association (CBDNA) Eastern Division Conference, and the Midwest Clinic in Chicago. The ensemble has also performed with several renowned guest artists, including saxophonist Eugene Rousseau, trumpeter Allen Vizzutti, and composer David Maslanka. One of the highlights of the IUP Wind Ensemble's history was its performance at the 2009 CBDNA National Conference in Austin, Texas. The ensemble was one of only six wind ensembles selected to perform at the conference, which is considered one of the most prestigious events in the wind band world. The ensemble's performance was highly praised by critics and audience members alike, and cemented its reputation as one of the top wind ensembles in the country. In addition to its performances, the IUP Wind Ensemble has also received numerous awards and accolades over the years. The ensemble has been invited to perform at several state and national conferences, and has received several grants and awards for its innovative programming and commitment to musical excellence. In 2015, the ensemble was awarded the Sudler Silver Scroll, which is considered one of the highest honors in the wind band world. The award is given to ensembles that have demonstrated the highest level of musical excellence and have made significant contributions to the wind band repertoire. The IUP Wind Ensemble's repertoire is diverse and includes works from a wide range of composers and styles. The ensemble has premiered several new works by contemporary composers, including David Maslanka, John Mackey, and Joel Puckett. The ensemble also performs traditional wind band repertoire, as well as transcriptions of orchestral works and popular music. The IUP Wind Ensemble's current conductor and director is Dr. Timothy Paul, who took over the ensemble in 2015. Dr. Paul is a highly respected conductor and educator who has conducted ensembles all over the world.
