Artist Info
Thomas Reed was born on May 10, 1956, in London, England. He grew up in a family of musicians, with his father being a renowned pianist and his mother a violinist. From a young age, Reed showed a keen interest in music and began playing the piano at the age of four. He later picked up the clarinet and quickly became proficient in playing the instrument. Reed attended the Royal Academy of Music in London, where he studied under the tutelage of renowned clarinetist Jack Brymer. He graduated with honors in 1977 and went on to pursue a career in music. In 1980, Reed joined the London Symphony Orchestra as their principal clarinetist. He quickly established himself as one of the leading clarinetists of his generation, known for his technical prowess and musical sensitivity. He remained with the orchestra for over a decade, during which time he performed in some of the world's most prestigious concert halls and collaborated with some of the most renowned conductors and soloists of the time. In addition to his work with the London Symphony Orchestra, Reed was also a sought-after soloist and chamber musician. He performed regularly with the Nash Ensemble, a renowned chamber group based in London, and was a frequent guest artist with other leading orchestras around the world. Reed's repertoire was vast and varied, ranging from classical works by Mozart and Beethoven to contemporary pieces by living composers. He was particularly known for his interpretations of the works of British composers, including Benjamin Britten and Michael Tippett. Throughout his career, Reed received numerous accolades and awards for his contributions to the world of classical music. In 1985, he was awarded the prestigious Royal Philharmonic Society's Instrumentalist of the Year award, and in 1992 he was made an Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) for his services to music. One of the highlights of Reed's career was his performance of Mozart's Clarinet Concerto in A major with the London Symphony Orchestra in 1991. The performance was recorded and released on CD, and quickly became a best-seller, cementing Reed's reputation as one of the leading clarinetists of his generation. In 1993, Reed left the London Symphony Orchestra to pursue a solo career. He continued to perform and record extensively, collaborating with a wide range of musicians and ensembles. He also became a respected teacher, serving as a professor of clarinet at the Royal Academy of Music and the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London. Tragically, Reed's career was cut short when he was diagnosed with cancer in 2007. He continued to perform and teach despite his illness, but passed away on October 23, 2008, at the age of 52. Reed's legacy as one of the greatest clarinetists of his generation lives on through his recordings and the countless musicians he inspired and taught. His technical mastery, musical sensitivity, and dedication to his craft continue to inspire and influence musicians around the world.More....
