Muriel Pollock was a British composer who lived from 1921 to 2016. She was born in London and grew up in a musical family. Her father was a violinist and her mother was a pianist, and they encouraged her to pursue music from a young age. Pollock began playing the piano at the age of four and later learned to play the violin and viola as well. Pollock studied at the Royal Academy of Music in London, where she was a student of Ralph Vaughan Williams and Gordon Jacob. She also studied composition with Herbert Howells and conducting with Adrian Boult. Pollock was a talented student and won several awards and scholarships during her time at the academy. After completing her studies, Pollock worked as a freelance composer and conductor. She composed music for a variety of ensembles, including orchestras, choirs, and chamber groups. Pollock's music was often inspired by nature and the English countryside, and she was known for her use of folk melodies and modal harmonies. One of Pollock's most famous works is her Symphony No. 1, which was premiered in 1953 by the BBC Symphony Orchestra. The symphony is in three movements and is characterized by its lush harmonies and sweeping melodies. The second movement, in particular, is known for its hauntingly beautiful theme played by the solo violin. Pollock also composed several works for choir, including her Missa Brevis, which was premiered in 1961 by the choir of St. John's College, Cambridge. The Missa Brevis is a setting of the Latin Mass and is notable for its use of modal harmonies and intricate counterpoint. In addition to her classical compositions, Pollock also wrote music for film and television. She composed the score for the 1967 film The Whisperers, which starred Edith Evans and Eric Portman. Pollock's music for the film was praised for its atmospheric and haunting quality. Pollock continued to compose and conduct throughout her life, and she was a respected figure in the British classical music scene. She was awarded the Order of the British Empire in 1985 for her contributions to music. Pollock's music is characterized by its lyrical melodies, lush harmonies, and use of folk melodies and modal harmonies. Her compositions are often inspired by nature and the English countryside, and she was known for her ability to evoke a sense of place and atmosphere in her music. Pollock's legacy continues to be celebrated today, and her music is still performed and recorded by orchestras and choirs around the world. Her contributions to classical music have earned her a place among the great composers of the 20th century.
