He was the son of a well-known Macedonian composer, Todor Nikolovski, who was also his first music teacher. Vlastimir Nikolovski showed an early interest in music and began playing the piano at the age of six. He later studied at the Skopje Music Academy, where he received a degree in composition. Nikolovski's early works were influenced by the traditional Macedonian folk music, which he incorporated into his compositions. He was also influenced by the works of classical composers such as Bach, Mozart, and Beethoven. Nikolovski's music was characterized by its unique blend of traditional Macedonian music and classical music. One of Nikolovski's early works was his "Concerto for Piano and Orchestra," which he composed in 1972. The concerto was well-received by audiences and critics alike and helped establish Nikolovski as a prominent composer in Macedonia. He went on to compose several other works, including "Symphony No. 1," "Symphony No. 2," and "Concerto for Violin and Orchestra." In 1980, Nikolovski was awarded the October Prize, the highest award for cultural achievement in Macedonia, for his contributions to classical music. He continued to compose throughout the 1980s and 1990s, and his works were performed by orchestras throughout Europe. One of Nikolovski's most notable works was his "Requiem," which he composed in 1999. The piece was dedicated to the victims of the Kosovo War and was performed by the Macedonian Philharmonic Orchestra. The "Requiem" was a powerful and emotional work that received critical acclaim and helped establish Nikolovski as a composer of international renown. Nikolovski's music was not only influenced by his Macedonian heritage but also by his experiences living in different parts of the world. He lived in Paris for several years, where he was exposed to the works of French composers such as Debussy and Ravel. He also spent time in the United States, where he was influenced by the works of American composers such as Copland and Bernstein. Nikolovski's music was characterized by its emotional depth and complexity. His compositions often featured intricate harmonies and rhythms, and he was known for his use of unconventional instruments and techniques. He was also a skilled orchestrator, and his works were often praised for their rich and colorful soundscapes. In addition to his work as a composer, Nikolovski was also a respected music educator. He taught at the Skopje Music Academy for many years and was known for his dedication to his students. Many of his former students went on to become successful composers and performers in their own right. Nikolovski's contributions to classical music were recognized both in Macedonia and internationally. He received numerous awards and honors throughout his career, including the Order of Merit for Macedonia, the highest civilian honor in the country. He was also a member of the Macedonian Academy of Sciences and Arts. Sadly, Vlastimir Nikolovski passed away on December 29, 2013, at the age of 66.
