The New York Latvian Concert Choir is a classical music ensemble that has been delighting audiences with their beautiful harmonies and powerful performances for over 60 years. Founded in 1953 by conductor Andrejs Jansons, the choir has become one of the most respected and beloved choral groups in the United States. The choir was born out of a desire to preserve and promote Latvian culture and music in the United States. Many Latvians had fled their homeland during World War II and settled in New York City, and Jansons saw an opportunity to bring these immigrants together through music. He recruited a group of talented singers and began rehearsing in a small church in the Bronx. From the beginning, the choir was dedicated to excellence in performance. Jansons demanded precision and discipline from his singers, and they responded with enthusiasm and dedication. The choir quickly gained a reputation for their beautiful sound and powerful performances, and they began to attract a following among both Latvian and non-Latvian audiences. Over the years, the choir has performed at some of the most prestigious venues in the United States and Europe. They have sung at Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, and the Kennedy Center, as well as at major festivals and competitions in Latvia, Estonia, and Lithuania. They have also collaborated with some of the world's most renowned conductors and orchestras, including the New York Philharmonic and the Boston Symphony Orchestra. One of the highlights of the choir's career came in 1990, when they were invited to perform at the Latvian Song Festival in Riga, Latvia. This festival, which takes place every five years, is one of the largest choral events in the world, and the choir was honored to be a part of it. They performed to a packed audience of over 30,000 people, and their performance was broadcast on Latvian television. The choir has also been recognized for their excellence in performance. They have won numerous awards and competitions, including the Grand Prix at the International Choral Competition in Tallinn, Estonia, and the Gold Medal at the International Choral Competition in Riva del Garda, Italy. They have also been awarded the Latvian Order of the Three Stars, one of the highest honors in Latvia. Despite their many accomplishments, the choir remains committed to their mission of promoting Latvian culture and music. They continue to perform regularly in New York City and around the world, and they have released several recordings of Latvian choral music. They also sponsor a scholarship program for young Latvian-American musicians, and they have established a fund to support Latvian cultural activities in the United States.
