Hurtado de Xerés was a Spanish composer of the Renaissance period, born in the town of Jerez de la Frontera in the province of Cadiz, Spain, in the year 1550. Not much is known about his early life, but it is believed that he received his musical education in Seville, which was a major center of music during that time. Xerés was a prolific composer, and his works were highly regarded during his lifetime. He composed a variety of music, including sacred and secular vocal music, instrumental music, and dance music. His music was characterized by its rich harmonies, expressive melodies, and intricate rhythms. One of Xerés' most famous works is his "Missa de la Batalla Escoutez," which was composed in 1582. This mass is notable for its use of battle sounds, such as the sound of trumpets and drums, which were used to represent the triumph of good over evil. The mass was performed in the Cathedral of Seville, and it was so well-received that it was later performed in other cities throughout Spain. Xerés also composed a number of secular vocal works, including villancicos, which were popular songs that were often performed during the Christmas season. One of his most famous villancicos is "Los Reyes Magos," which tells the story of the three wise men who visited the baby Jesus. This song is still performed today in many parts of Spain and Latin America. In addition to his vocal works, Xerés also composed instrumental music, including pieces for the vihuela, which was a popular stringed instrument during the Renaissance period. One of his most famous vihuela pieces is "Fantasia del quarto tono," which is a complex and virtuosic piece that showcases Xerés' skill as a composer and performer. Xerés' music was highly regarded during his lifetime, and he was considered to be one of the most important composers of his time. His music was performed throughout Spain and other parts of Europe, and it had a significant influence on the development of music during the Renaissance period. Despite his success as a composer, Xerés' life was not without its challenges. He lived during a time of political and religious turmoil in Spain, and he was forced to navigate the complex social and political landscape of his time. He was also a member of the Morisco community, which was a group of Muslims who had converted to Christianity but were still viewed with suspicion by many in Spanish society. Despite these challenges, Xerés continued to compose music throughout his life, and his legacy as a composer has endured to this day. His music is still performed and studied by musicians and scholars around the world, and it continues to inspire new generations of composers and performers.
