Vocal Majority is a renowned classical music ensemble that has been captivating audiences with their harmonious melodies for over 40 years. The group was founded in 1971 by Jim Clancy, a music educator and barbershop enthusiast, in Dallas, Texas. Clancy had a vision of creating a male a cappella group that would showcase the beauty and complexity of barbershop harmony. The ensemble started with just 12 members, but quickly grew in popularity due to their unique sound and captivating performances. Over the years, Vocal Majority has had a rotating cast of members, but some of the mainstays of the group include Jim Clancy, Greg Clancy, Mark Hale, and Jim Henry. One of the highlights of Vocal Majority's career was their performance at the 1986 International Barbershop Harmony Society Convention in Hartford, Connecticut. The group's rendition of "The Star-Spangled Banner" received a standing ovation from the audience and was later featured on the PBS special "The Great American Fourth of July and Other Disasters." In addition to their live performances, Vocal Majority has released numerous albums over the years, including "The Vocal Majority Christmas," "The Vocal Majority Live," and "The Vocal Majority Goes Broadway." Their albums have received critical acclaim and have won several awards, including multiple Contemporary A Cappella Recording Awards (CARAs). Vocal Majority has also been recognized for their philanthropic efforts. The group has raised over $5 million for various charities, including the American Cancer Society, the American Heart Association, and the Make-A-Wish Foundation. In 1996, Vocal Majority was inducted into the Barbershop Harmony Society Hall of Fame, cementing their place as one of the most influential and talented barbershop ensembles of all time. The group continues to perform and record music to this day, delighting audiences with their beautiful harmonies and timeless melodies.
