Czech RepublicBirth:1925Jirí Jirmal was a Czech composer and guitarist who was born on January 24, 1926, in Prague, Czechoslovakia. He was the son of a music teacher and grew up in a musical family. His father was a violinist and his mother was a pianist. Jirmal started playing the guitar at the age of 12 and quickly became proficient in the instrument. Jirmal studied at the Prague Conservatory from 1945 to 1950, where he studied composition with Alois Hába and guitar with František Burda. After completing his studies, he worked as a freelance composer and guitarist. He also taught guitar at the Prague Conservatory from 1955 to 1960. Jirmal's music is characterized by its use of folk melodies and rhythms, as well as its incorporation of elements of jazz and other contemporary styles. He was particularly interested in exploring the possibilities of the guitar as a solo instrument, and many of his compositions are written for solo guitar. One of Jirmal's most famous works is his Suite for Guitar, which was composed in 1957. The suite consists of five movements, each of which is based on a different folk melody. The suite is notable for its use of unusual guitar techniques, such as harmonics and glissandi, as well as its incorporation of jazz and other contemporary styles. Another notable work by Jirmal is his Concerto for Guitar and Orchestra, which was composed in 1963. The concerto is written in a neo-classical style and features virtuosic passages for the solo guitar. The work has been performed by many of the world's leading guitarists, including Julian Bream and John Williams. Jirmal also wrote a number of works for guitar duo, including his Sonata for Two Guitars, which was composed in 1960. The sonata is notable for its use of counterpoint and its incorporation of elements of jazz and other contemporary styles. In addition to his work as a composer, Jirmal was also a respected guitar teacher. He taught at the Prague Conservatory from 1955 to 1960 and later taught at the Janáček Academy of Music and Performing Arts in Brno from 1960 to 1991. Many of his students went on to become successful guitarists and composers in their own right. Jirmal's music has been performed and recorded by many of the world's leading guitarists, including Julian Bream, John Williams, and Sharon Isbin. His compositions have also been featured in numerous guitar competitions and festivals around the world. Jirmal died on December 12, 2003, in Brno, Czech Republic. He is remembered as one of the most important Czech composers of the 20th century and as a pioneering figure in the development of the guitar as a solo instrument.More....
