Role:EnsembleRed Cedar Chamber Music is a classical music ensemble based in Iowa City, Iowa. The group was founded in 1997 by flutist Jan Boland and guitarist John Dowdall, who had previously performed together in the Iowa City Symphony Orchestra. The ensemble takes its name from the red cedar trees that are native to the area. Boland and Dowdall were joined in the early years of the group by cellist Carey Bostian and violist Miera Kim. The ensemble's repertoire includes works from the Baroque, Classical, Romantic, and contemporary periods, as well as traditional music from around the world. Red Cedar Chamber Music has performed extensively throughout the United States and internationally, including tours in Europe and Asia. The group has also collaborated with a wide range of artists, including dancers, poets, and visual artists. One of the highlights of Red Cedar Chamber Music's career was their performance at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C. in 2005. The group was invited to perform as part of the Millennium Stage series, which showcases artists from around the world. The performance was well-received by both the audience and critics, and helped to raise the group's profile nationally. In addition to their performances, Red Cedar Chamber Music is also committed to education and outreach. The group regularly performs in schools and community centers, and has developed a number of educational programs for students of all ages. These programs include workshops, masterclasses, and residencies, and are designed to introduce students to the joys of classical music. Red Cedar Chamber Music has received numerous awards and accolades over the years. In 2001, the group was awarded the Iowa Arts Council's Major Grant for Artistic Excellence, which recognizes outstanding artists and arts organizations in the state. The group has also been featured on National Public Radio's Performance Today program, and has been praised by critics for their virtuosity and musicality. Despite the challenges facing classical music ensembles in the 21st century, Red Cedar Chamber Music has continued to thrive. The group's commitment to excellence, innovation, and education has helped to make them one of the most respected and beloved ensembles in the Midwest and beyond.More....
