Mariano's parents were not musicians, but they encouraged their children to pursue their interests. Mariano showed an early interest in music and began playing the clarinet at the age of 10. He was a natural talent and quickly became proficient in playing the instrument. Mariano's parents recognized his talent and enrolled him in music lessons. He studied under the guidance of renowned clarinetist Daniel Bonade, who was a member of the New York Philharmonic. Mariano's talent continued to grow, and he began performing in public at the age of 14. He played in various local orchestras and bands, and his performances were well-received. Mariano's talent caught the attention of the music community, and he was offered a scholarship to attend the Juilliard School of Music in New York City. At Juilliard, Mariano studied under the guidance of renowned clarinetist Robert McGinnis. He continued to excel in his studies and was awarded the prestigious Naumburg Scholarship in 1949.
