Carlos Vicente Geroni Flores was a renowned Argentine composer, pianist, and music educator. He was born on August 20, 1896, in Buenos Aires, Argentina. His father, Carlos Geroni Flores, was a composer and conductor, and his mother, María Luisa Flores, was a pianist. From a young age, Carlos Vicente showed a keen interest in music and began studying piano with his mother. At the age of 14, Carlos Vicente entered the National Conservatory of Music in Buenos Aires, where he studied piano with Vicente Scaramuzza and composition with Alberto Williams. He graduated with honors in 1917 and went on to study in Europe, where he continued his piano studies with Isidor Philipp in Paris and composition with Ottorino Respighi in Rome. Upon his return to Argentina in 1921, Carlos Vicente began a successful career as a composer, pianist, and music educator. He taught at the National Conservatory of Music and the National University of La Plata, where he was also the director of the music department. He was a prolific composer, writing over 200 works in a variety of genres, including orchestral, chamber, vocal, and piano music. One of Carlos Vicente's most famous works is his Piano Concerto No. 1, which he composed in 1923. The concerto is a virtuosic showcase for the soloist, with sweeping melodies and intricate passagework. It has been performed by many of the world's leading pianists, including Martha Argerich and Daniel Barenboim. Another notable work by Carlos Vicente is his Suite Argentina, which he composed in 1935. The suite is a collection of dances inspired by the traditional music of Argentina, including the tango, milonga, and zamba. It has become a staple of the Argentine classical music repertoire and is often performed by orchestras and chamber ensembles. In addition to his compositions, Carlos Vicente was also a respected music educator.
