Maitrîse de Caen is a classical music ensemble that was founded in 1981 in Caen, France. The ensemble is made up of young singers who are trained in the art of choral singing and who perform a wide range of classical music repertoire. The founding of Maitrîse de Caen was the result of a collaboration between the city of Caen and the Conservatoire à Rayonnement Régional de Caen. The goal of the ensemble was to provide young singers with the opportunity to receive high-quality training in choral singing and to perform in public concerts. The ensemble is led by a team of experienced choral directors, including Jean-Pierre Leguay, who served as the ensemble's artistic director from 1981 to 1991. Under Leguay's leadership, Maitrîse de Caen quickly gained a reputation for excellence in choral singing and began to perform in major concert halls throughout France and Europe. One of the highlights of Maitrîse de Caen's early years was its performance at the Festival de Musique de Strasbourg in 1983. The ensemble received critical acclaim for its performance of works by Bach, Handel, and Mozart, and was invited to perform at the festival again in 1985. In 1991, Leguay was succeeded as artistic director by Michel Laplénie, who continued to build on the ensemble's reputation for excellence in choral singing. Under Laplénie's leadership, Maitrîse de Caen began to expand its repertoire to include works by contemporary composers, as well as traditional choral music. One of the highlights of Maitrîse de Caen's performances under Laplénie was its performance of Benjamin Britten's War Requiem in 1995. The ensemble received critical acclaim for its performance of this challenging work, which features a large choir, soloists, and orchestra. In addition to its performances in major concert halls, Maitrîse de Caen has also been involved in a number of educational and outreach programs. The ensemble has worked with schools and community groups to promote the art of choral singing and to encourage young people to pursue careers in music. Maitrîse de Caen has received numerous awards and accolades for its performances over the years. In 1998, the ensemble was awarded the Grand Prix du Disque for its recording of works by Gabriel Fauré. The ensemble has also been awarded the Prix Liliane Bettencourt pour le chant choral, which recognizes excellence in choral singing. Today, Maitrîse de Caen continues to be one of the leading choral ensembles in France. The ensemble's members are drawn from the Conservatoire à Rayonnement Régional de Caen and are selected through a rigorous audition process. The ensemble's repertoire includes works from the Renaissance to the present day, and the ensemble continues to perform in major concert halls throughout France and Europe. In conclusion, Maitrîse de Caen is a classical music ensemble that was founded in 1981 in Caen, France.
