He was the son of a Jewish family, and his father was a successful businessman. Joachim showed an early interest in music and began playing the piano at the age of six. He later studied composition with Paul Hindemith and conducting with Hermann Scherchen. In 1933, Joachim fled Germany due to the rise of the Nazi party and settled in England. He continued his studies at the Royal College of Music in London and later became a British citizen. During World War II, Joachim served in the British Army and was stationed in India, where he conducted the Calcutta Symphony Orchestra. After the war, Joachim moved to Canada and became a professor of music at the University of Toronto. He also founded the Canadian League of Composers and served as its president from 1951 to 1953. Joachim was a prolific composer and wrote music in a variety of genres, including orchestral works, chamber music, and vocal music. One of Joachim's most significant works is his Symphony No. 1, which he composed in 1947. The symphony is in three movements and features a lush, romantic style. The work was well-received by critics and helped establish Joachim as a leading Canadian composer. Joachim also wrote several works for chamber ensembles, including his String Quartet No. 1, which he composed in 1950. The quartet is in four movements and features intricate counterpoint and rich harmonies. Joachim's chamber music is known for its complexity and demands a high level of technical skill from the performers. In addition to his work as a composer, Joachim was also a respected conductor. He conducted the Toronto Symphony Orchestra and the CBC Symphony Orchestra and was known for his interpretations of contemporary music. Joachim was also a dedicated music educator and taught at the University of Toronto for over 20 years. Joachim's music is characterized by its lush harmonies, intricate counterpoint, and complex rhythms. He was influenced by a variety of musical styles, including the music of Bach, Beethoven, and Brahms, as well as contemporary composers such as Stravinsky and Bartok. Joachim's music is often described as being both modern and accessible, and he was known for his ability to bridge the gap between traditional and contemporary music. In 1975, Joachim was awarded the Order of Canada for his contributions to Canadian music. He continued to compose and teach until his death on March 12, 2010, at the age of 99. Joachim's legacy as a composer, conductor, and music educator continues to be celebrated in Canada and around the world.More....
