Bernard Andres was a French harpist and composer who was born on August 6, 1941, in Belfort, France. He was the son of a music teacher and grew up in a musical family. His father was a pianist and his mother was a singer, and they both encouraged him to pursue music from a young age. Andres began playing the harp at the age of 11 and quickly showed a natural talent for the instrument. He studied at the Paris Conservatory under the renowned harpist Lily Laskine, and later became a professor of harp at the Conservatory. As a composer, Andres was known for his innovative use of the harp and his ability to blend traditional and contemporary styles. He wrote over 50 works for the harp, including solo pieces, chamber music, and concertos. One of Andres' most famous works is his "Epices" suite for solo harp, which was inspired by the flavors and aromas of different spices. The suite consists of six movements, each named after a different spice, and showcases Andres' ability to create a wide range of sounds and textures on the harp. Another notable work by Andres is his "Narayana's Cows" for harp and string quartet, which was commissioned by the French Ministry of Culture in 1990. The piece is based on a Hindu legend about a herd of magical cows and features intricate rhythms and harmonies. Andres also wrote several concertos for the harp, including his "Concertino" for harp and string orchestra, which was premiered in 1981. The piece features a virtuosic solo part and showcases Andres' ability to blend classical and contemporary styles. In addition to his work as a composer, Andres was also a respected harpist and performed with several orchestras and ensembles throughout his career. He was known for his expressive playing style and his ability to bring out the unique qualities of the harp. Andres received numerous awards and honors throughout his career, including the Grand Prix de la Ville de Paris in 1977 and the Prix de la SACEM in 1990. He was also a member of the French Academy of Fine Arts and the Royal Academy of Belgium. Andres continued to compose and perform until his death on September 28, 2021, at the age of 80. His legacy as a composer and harpist continues to inspire and influence musicians around the world.
