He was the son of a well-known conductor and composer, Karel Ostrcil, who was the founder of the Czech Philharmonic Orchestra. Otakar grew up in a musical family and was exposed to music from a very young age. He began his musical education at the Prague Conservatory, where he studied composition with Antonin Dvorak and conducting with Karel Knittl. After completing his studies, Ostrcil began his career as a conductor, working with various orchestras in Europe. He was appointed as the conductor of the Czech Philharmonic Orchestra in 1911, a position he held until 1919. During his tenure, he conducted many premieres of works by Czech composers, including Janacek, Suk, and Martinu. Ostrcil was also a prolific composer, and his works were influenced by the Czech nationalist movement. He wrote in a variety of genres, including orchestral works, chamber music, and operas. His most famous works include the opera "Vanda," the symphonic poem "From Bohemia's Woods and Fields," and the "Sinfonietta for Strings." In addition to his work as a conductor and composer, Ostrcil was also a teacher. He taught at the Prague Conservatory and was a mentor to many young Czech composers, including Bohuslav Martinu. Ostrcil's career was cut short when he died in a tragic accident in 1935. He was conducting a performance of his own work, "Suite for Large Orchestra," when he fell from the podium and suffered fatal injuries. Despite his untimely death, Ostrcil's legacy lives on through his music. His works continue to be performed and recorded, and he is remembered as one of the most important Czech composers of the early 20th century.More....
