The orchestra was founded in 1952 by the renowned German conductor Kurt Sanderling, who served as its principal conductor until 1960. The ensemble was originally known as the Berliner Sinfonie-Orchester der Deutschen Staatsoper, and it was affiliated with the Deutsche Staatsoper Berlin. The orchestra's early years were marked by a series of successful performances and collaborations with some of the most prominent musicians of the time. In 1953, the orchestra performed at the Berliner Festwochen, a prestigious music festival that showcased the best classical music ensembles from around the world. The orchestra's performance was well-received, and it helped to establish the ensemble as one of the leading orchestras in Germany. In 1998, the conductor Yoel Levi was appointed as the orchestra's principal conductor, a position he held until 2000. During Levi's tenure, the Berliner Sinfonie-Orchester continued to perform at major music festivals around the world, and it collaborated with some of the most prominent musicians of the time. In 2000, the conductor Lior Shambadal was appointed as the orchestra's principal conductor, a position he held until 2006. Under Shambadal's leadership, the orchestra continued to expand its repertoire and perform at major music festivals around the world. In 2006, the conductor Stanley Dodds was appointed as the orchestra's principal conductor, a position he held until 2010. During his tenure, the orchestra continued to build its reputation as one of the finest classical music ensembles in Europe. In 2010, the conductor Michael Sanderling, the son of the orchestra's founder Kurt Sanderling, was appointed as the orchestra's principal conductor, a position he holds to this day. Under Michael Sanderling's leadership, the Berliner Sinfonie-Orchester has continued to thrive, and it has become known for its innovative programming and collaborations with contemporary composers.
