He grew up in a family of musicians, with his father being a jazz pianist and his mother a classical pianist. From a young age, Marshall showed a keen interest in music and began playing the piano at the age of four. Marshall's early musical education was primarily focused on classical music, and he studied at the Royal College of Music in London. He later went on to study at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, where he received a degree in composition. Throughout his career, Marshall composed a wide range of music, including orchestral works, chamber music, and solo piano pieces. His music was known for its lyrical melodies, intricate harmonies, and use of unconventional rhythms and time signatures. One of Marshall's most notable works is his Piano Concerto, which was premiered in 1983 by the London Symphony Orchestra. The concerto is a virtuosic showcase for the solo pianist, with fast-paced runs and intricate passages that require great technical skill. The piece also features lush orchestration and a memorable main theme that is repeated throughout the work. Another highlight of Marshall's career was his collaboration with the renowned choreographer Mark Morris. Marshall composed the music for several of Morris's dance works, including "Gloria," which premiered in 1981. The piece is set to the music of Antonio Vivaldi's "Gloria in D Major," but Marshall's arrangement adds a modern twist to the Baroque masterpiece. In addition to his work as a composer, Marshall was also an accomplished pianist. He performed regularly as a soloist and chamber musician, and his recordings of works by composers such as Beethoven, Schumann, and Debussy received critical acclaim. Marshall's music was influenced by a wide range of composers and styles, including the works of Bach, Stravinsky, and jazz pianist Bill Evans. He was also interested in the music of other cultures, and his compositions often incorporated elements of Indian classical music and African rhythms. Throughout his career, Marshall received numerous awards and honors for his contributions to the world of classical music. In 1992, he was awarded the prestigious Ivor Novello Award for his composition "The Garden of Love," which was written for the BBC Proms. He was also a fellow of the Royal Society of Arts and a member of the British Academy of Songwriters, Composers, and Authors. Sadly, Marshall passed away on August 9, 2019, at the age of 71. However, his legacy as a composer and pianist lives on through his music, which continues to be performed and recorded by musicians around the world. His contributions to the world of classical music have left a lasting impact, and his innovative approach to composition has inspired countless musicians and composers.More....
