Paul Faulise was an American classical trombonist who was born on December 14, 1938, in New York City. He grew up in a musical family, with his father being a professional trombonist and his mother a pianist. Faulise began playing the trombone at the age of 10 and quickly showed a natural talent for the instrument. Faulise attended the Juilliard School of Music in New York City, where he studied under the renowned trombonist Emory Remington. He graduated from Juilliard in 1960 and immediately began his professional career as a trombonist. Faulise quickly established himself as one of the top trombonists in the country, performing with some of the most prestigious orchestras and ensembles in the world. He was a member of the New York Philharmonic from 1965 to 1970, and during that time, he also performed with the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra and the American Symphony Orchestra. In 1970, Faulise joined the Boston Symphony Orchestra as principal trombonist, a position he held until his retirement in 2001. During his tenure with the Boston Symphony Orchestra, Faulise was widely regarded as one of the finest trombonists in the world. He was known for his impeccable technique, his beautiful tone, and his ability to blend seamlessly with the other members of the orchestra. Faulise was also a highly sought-after soloist and chamber musician. He performed with many of the world's leading chamber ensembles, including the Boston Symphony Chamber Players, the New York Brass Quintet, and the Empire Brass Quintet. He also performed as a soloist with many of the world's top orchestras, including the New York Philharmonic, the Boston Symphony Orchestra, and the London Symphony Orchestra. Throughout his career, Faulise received numerous awards and honors for his contributions to classical music. In 1986, he was awarded the Harvard University Distinguished Service to Music Medal, and in 1995, he was awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award from the International Trombone Association. He was also a member of the American Brass Quintet, which was inducted into the American Classical Music Hall of Fame in 2008. Faulise was known not only for his musical talent but also for his dedication to teaching and mentoring young musicians. He was a faculty member at the New England Conservatory of Music for over 30 years, where he taught many of the world's top trombonists. He was also a frequent guest lecturer and masterclass teacher at universities and conservatories around the world. Faulise retired from the Boston Symphony Orchestra in 2001 but continued to perform and teach until his death on January 25, 2014, at the age of 75. He left behind a legacy as one of the greatest trombonists of his generation and a beloved teacher and mentor to countless young musicians.
