Howard Rovics was a renowned American composer of classical music, born on May 12, 1948, in New York City. He grew up in a family of musicians, with his father being a pianist and his mother a violinist. From a young age, Rovics showed a keen interest in music and began playing the piano at the age of four. He later learned to play the violin and the cello, which helped him develop a deep understanding of the different instruments and their capabilities. Rovics attended the Juilliard School of Music in New York City, where he studied composition under the tutelage of renowned composers such as Milton Babbitt and Elliott Carter. He also studied conducting with Jean Morel and Pierre Boulez. During his time at Juilliard, Rovics was exposed to a wide range of musical styles, from the traditional classical repertoire to the avant-garde works of the 20th century. After completing his studies at Juilliard, Rovics began his career as a composer, writing works for a variety of ensembles and soloists. His early works were heavily influenced by the serialist techniques of his teachers, but he soon began to develop his own unique style, which blended elements of serialism with more traditional tonal harmonies. One of Rovics' most notable works from this period is his String Quartet No. 1, which was premiered in 1972 by the Juilliard String Quartet. The piece is a complex and challenging work, featuring intricate rhythms and harmonies that showcase Rovics' mastery of the string quartet form. Throughout the 1970s and 1980s, Rovics continued to write works for a variety of ensembles, including orchestras, chamber groups, and soloists. His music was performed by some of the most prestigious ensembles in the world, including the New York Philharmonic, the Boston Symphony Orchestra, and the London Symphony Orchestra. One of Rovics' most famous works from this period is his Symphony No. 1, which was premiered by the New York Philharmonic in 1980. The piece is a grand and sweeping work, featuring lush orchestration and soaring melodies that evoke the spirit of the Romantic era. In the 1990s, Rovics began to explore new musical territories, incorporating elements of world music and jazz into his compositions. He also began to experiment with electronic music, using synthesizers and other electronic instruments to create new sounds and textures. One of Rovics' most innovative works from this period is his Concerto for Electric Guitar and Orchestra, which was premiered in 1995 by the Boston Symphony Orchestra. The piece features a virtuosic solo guitar part, which is accompanied by a full orchestra and electronic instruments. The work is a testament to Rovics' ability to blend different musical styles and create something truly unique. In addition to his work as a composer, Rovics was also a respected conductor and educator. He served as the music director of the New York Youth Symphony from 1985 to 1992, and he taught composition at the Juilliard School from 1992 until his retirement in 2013. Throughout his career, Rovics received numerous awards and honors for his contributions to the world of classical music. He was a recipient of the Guggenheim Fellowship, the Rome Prize, and the Pulitzer Prize for Music, among others. Howard Rovics passed away on June 1, 2015, at the age of 67. His legacy as a composer, conductor, and educator continues to inspire generations of musicians and music lovers around the world.
