Fampas was born into a family of musicians, and his father, George Fampas, was a well-known composer and conductor. His mother, Maria Fampas, was a pianist and music teacher. Fampas grew up in a musical environment, and his parents encouraged him to pursue a career in music. Fampas started playing the guitar at a young age, and he quickly showed a natural talent for the instrument. He studied music theory and guitar technique with his father and other prominent musicians in Greece. Fampas also studied composition with the famous Greek composer Manolis Kalomiris. In 1940, Fampas enrolled at the Athens Conservatory, where he studied guitar with the renowned guitarist and composer, Evangelos Boudounis. Fampas graduated from the conservatory in 1945, and he continued his studies in Paris, France, where he studied with the famous guitarist and composer, Andrés Segovia. Fampas returned to Greece in 1947, and he began his career as a performer and composer. He performed extensively throughout Greece and Europe, and he became known for his virtuosic guitar playing and his innovative compositions. Fampas was also a prolific composer, and he wrote music for the guitar, as well as chamber music, orchestral music, and vocal music. One of Fampas's most famous works is his "Concerto for Guitar and Orchestra," which he composed in 1959. The concerto is a virtuosic showcase for the guitar, and it has become a staple of the classical guitar repertoire. Fampas also wrote several other works for the guitar, including "Sonata for Guitar," "Variations on a Greek Folk Song," and "Three Greek Dances."
