Rubin Seroussi was born on January 1, 1952, in Tel Aviv, Israel. He grew up in a family of musicians, with his father being a violinist and his mother a pianist. From a young age, Seroussi showed a natural talent for music and began studying the piano at the age of six. Seroussi's musical education continued at the Tel Aviv Academy of Music, where he studied composition and conducting. He also studied at the Rubin Academy of Music in Jerusalem, where he received a degree in composition. In 1976, Seroussi moved to the United States to further his musical career. He enrolled in the Juilliard School in New York City, where he studied composition with Vincent Persichetti and conducting with Jorge Mester. During his time at Juilliard, Seroussi also worked as a pianist and conductor for the New York City Ballet. After completing his studies at Juilliard, Seroussi returned to Israel and began working as a composer and conductor. He quickly gained a reputation as one of Israel's most talented and innovative musicians, and his works were performed by some of the country's leading orchestras and ensembles. In 1983, Seroussi was appointed the music director of the Israel Chamber Orchestra, a position he held for 12 years. During his tenure, he led the orchestra on numerous international tours and recorded several critically acclaimed albums. Seroussi's compositions are known for their unique blend of classical and Middle Eastern music. He often incorporates traditional Israeli and Arabic melodies into his works, creating a sound that is both modern and rooted in tradition. Some of Seroussi's most notable works include his Symphony No. 1, which was premiered by the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra in 1985, and his Concerto for Oud and Orchestra, which was premiered by the Israel Chamber Orchestra in 1992. In addition to his work as a composer and conductor, Seroussi has also been a dedicated music educator. He has taught at several universities and conservatories, including the Jerusalem Academy of Music and Dance and the Buchmann-Mehta School of Music at Tel Aviv University. Throughout his career, Seroussi has received numerous awards and honors for his contributions to classical music. In 1995, he was awarded the Israel Prize, the country's highest honor for achievement in the arts and sciences. He has also been awarded the ACUM Prize for Lifetime Achievement and the Prime Minister's Prize for Composers. Today, Seroussi continues to compose and conduct, and his works are performed by orchestras and ensembles around the world. He remains a leading figure in Israeli classical music and a respected voice in the international music community.
