His father was a well-known singer and conductor, and his mother was a pianist. Francis began his musical education at a young age, studying piano and organ with his mother and singing in his father's choir. At the age of 16, Francis moved to London to study at the Royal Academy of Music. He studied composition with William Sterndale Bennett and organ with Thomas Attwood Walmisley. He was a talented student and won several prizes for his compositions. After completing his studies, he returned to Dublin and became the organist at St. Patrick's Cathedral. In 1863, Francis moved to London and became the organist at St. Michael's Church in Chester Square. He also began to compose more seriously, and his works were well-received. In 1870, he was appointed the organist at St. George's Church in Hanover Square, a prestigious position that he held for the rest of his life. Francis was a prolific composer, and his works include choral music, organ music, and chamber music. He was particularly known for his choral music, which was often performed at the great cathedrals of England. His most famous work is probably his anthem "Lead, Kindly Light," which is still sung in churches today. In addition to his work as a composer and organist, Francis was also a respected musicologist. He wrote several books on music, including a history of the organ and a biography of the composer William Byrd. He was also a member of the Royal Society of Musicians and was awarded an honorary doctorate from the University of Dublin. Despite his success as a composer and musician, Francis was known for his modesty and humility. He was a devout Christian and believed that his music was a gift from God. He never sought fame or fortune, but instead dedicated his life to his music and his faith. Francis Stanfield died in 1914 at the age of 79.
