James Horner was a prolific composer of classical music, known for his work in film and television. He was born on August 14, 1953, in Los Angeles, California, to a Jewish family. His father was a production designer and his mother was a set decorator, both of whom worked in the film industry. Horner grew up in a creative environment and was exposed to music from an early age. Horner began playing the piano at the age of five and later learned to play the guitar and the trumpet. He attended the Royal College of Music in London, where he studied composition and orchestration. After completing his studies, he returned to the United States and began working as a composer for film and television. Horner's first major film score was for the 1979 film "The Lady in Red." He went on to compose music for a number of other films, including "Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan," "Cocoon," and "Aliens." In 1986, he received his first Academy Award nomination for his work on the film "Aliens." Horner's breakthrough came in 1995 with his score for the film "Braveheart." The score, which featured traditional Scottish instruments such as bagpipes and fiddles, won Horner his first Academy Award. He went on to win a second Academy Award in 1998 for his work on the film "Titanic." The score for "Titanic" was a massive success, selling over 27 million copies worldwide and becoming one of the best-selling film scores of all time. Horner continued to work in film and television throughout his career, composing music for such films as "A Beautiful Mind," "The Perfect Storm," and "Avatar." He was known for his ability to create emotional and memorable scores that enhanced the storytelling of the films he worked on. In addition to his work in film and television, Horner also composed classical music. He wrote a number of concertos, including a double concerto for violin and cello, which was premiered by Yo-Yo Ma and Itzhak Perlman in 1986. He also wrote a number of choral works, including "The Mask of Zorro" and "The Boy in the Striped Pajamas." Horner was known for his collaborative approach to composing, often working closely with directors and producers to create music that perfectly complemented the visuals and narrative of the films he worked on. He was also known for his use of unconventional instruments and techniques, such as using a choir of children's voices in the score for "The Boy in the Striped Pajamas." Horner tragically died in a plane crash on June 22, 2015, at the age of 61. His death was a shock to the music and film communities, and he was mourned by fans and colleagues alike. His legacy lives on through his music, which continues to inspire and move audiences around the world. Will Jennings was a lyricist and songwriter who collaborated with James Horner on a number of film scores. He was born on June 27, 1944, in Kilgore, Texas, and grew up in a musical family.
