Joseph Corfe was a British composer and organist who lived from 1770 to 1825. He was born in London, England, and showed an early interest in music. His father, William Corfe, was a musician and organist, and he likely played a role in Joseph's musical education. Joseph Corfe began his career as a chorister at St. Paul's Cathedral in London. He later became an organist at several churches in London, including St. Mary's Church in Lambeth and St. George's Church in Bloomsbury. He also worked as a music teacher and composer. Corfe's compositions were primarily vocal works, including anthems, hymns, and psalm settings. He also wrote instrumental music, including sonatas for organ and piano. His music was influenced by the classical style of his time, but he also incorporated elements of the Baroque and Romantic periods. One of Corfe's most famous works is his anthem "O Lord, Thou Hast Searched Me Out." This piece is still performed today and is considered a classic of English church music. Other notable works by Corfe include his "Te Deum" and "Jubilate," both of which were written for the coronation of King George IV in 1821. Corfe's music was well-regarded during his lifetime, and he was considered one of the leading composers of his time. He was a member of the Royal Society of Musicians and was appointed as the organist of St. George's Chapel at Windsor Castle in 1817. Despite his success as a composer and musician, Corfe struggled with financial difficulties throughout his life. He was forced to sell his music manuscripts to make ends meet, and he died in poverty in 1825. Today, Joseph Corfe is remembered as a talented composer and musician who made significant contributions to the English church music tradition. His works continue to be performed and studied by musicians and music scholars around the world.
