United KingdomBirth:1927 in Lincoln, NEGeoffrey Kimpton was a British composer of classical music who was born on May 12, 1927, in London, England. He was the son of a music teacher and grew up in a musical family. His father was a pianist and his mother was a singer, and they both encouraged him to pursue a career in music. Kimpton began his musical education at an early age, studying piano and composition with his father. He later attended the Royal Academy of Music in London, where he studied composition with William Alwyn and piano with Harold Craxton. He also studied conducting with Sir Adrian Boult and Sir John Barbirolli. After completing his studies, Kimpton began his career as a composer, writing music for a variety of ensembles and genres. His early works were influenced by the neoclassical style of composers such as Stravinsky and Hindemith, but he later developed his own unique voice, incorporating elements of jazz and popular music into his compositions. One of Kimpton's early successes was his Piano Concerto, which was premiered in 1954 by the BBC Symphony Orchestra with the composer as soloist. The work was well-received and helped establish Kimpton as a rising star in the British classical music scene. In the 1960s, Kimpton began to experiment with electronic music, incorporating tape recordings and synthesizers into his compositions. His work in this area culminated in the creation of his Electronic Symphony, which was premiered in 1968 and featured a large ensemble of electronic instruments. Kimpton's music was often characterized by its rhythmic vitality and colorful orchestration. He was particularly skilled at writing for percussion, and many of his works feature intricate and complex rhythms. One of Kimpton's most famous works is his Symphony No. 2, which was premiered in 1972 by the London Symphony Orchestra under the direction of André Previn. The work is a large-scale, four-movement symphony that showcases Kimpton's skill as an orchestrator and his ability to create powerful and dramatic musical gestures. In addition to his work as a composer, Kimpton was also a respected music educator. He taught at the Royal Academy of Music and the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, and his students included many successful composers and performers. Kimpton continued to compose and perform throughout his life, and his music remains popular with audiences and performers alike. He died on January 1, 2009, at the age of 81, leaving behind a legacy of innovative and exciting music.More....
