He was the son of a Scottish father and an Australian mother, and his family was musically inclined. His father was a violinist, and his mother was a pianist, and they encouraged their son to pursue music from a young age. Carmichael began his musical education at the age of six when he started taking piano lessons. He showed great talent and dedication to music, and by the age of 12, he had already composed his first piece. He continued his studies at the Melbourne Conservatorium of Music, where he studied composition with Dorian Le Gallienne and piano with Roy Shepherd. In 1951, Carmichael won the prestigious Percy Grainger Memorial Competition, which gave him the opportunity to study in London with the renowned composer and pianist, Arthur Benjamin. He spent the next few years studying and performing in Europe, where he was exposed to a wide range of musical styles and traditions. Carmichael returned to Australia in 1954 and began his career as a composer and performer. He quickly established himself as one of Australia's leading musicians, and his works were performed by some of the country's most prominent orchestras and ensembles. One of Carmichael's most significant works is his Piano Concerto No. 1, which he composed in 1955. The concerto is a virtuosic showcase for the soloist, and it has become one of the most frequently performed works in the Australian piano repertoire. The concerto was premiered by the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, with Carmichael himself as the soloist. Carmichael's music is characterized by its lyrical melodies, rhythmic vitality, and colorful orchestration. He drew inspiration from a wide range of sources, including jazz, folk music, and the natural world. His works often feature Australian themes and landscapes, and he was a strong advocate for the promotion of Australian music. In addition to his work as a composer, Carmichael was also a highly regarded pianist and conductor. Some of his other notable works include his Symphony No. 1, which was premiered by the Sydney Symphony Orchestra in 1963, and his ballet, A Country Fair, which was commissioned by the Australian Ballet in 1971. Carmichael was also a respected music educator, and he held teaching positions at several universities and conservatories throughout his career.
