Born in Halifax, Nova Scotia, in 1959, Reilly grew up in a family of musicians and was exposed to music from an early age. His father was a jazz pianist, and his mother was a singer, which inspired him to pursue a career in music. Reilly began his musical journey by learning the clarinet at the age of nine. He quickly developed a passion for the instrument and started performing in local bands and orchestras. He later switched to the bass clarinet, which became his primary instrument. Reilly continued his musical education at Dalhousie University in Halifax, where he studied with renowned clarinetist James Campbell. After completing his studies, Reilly began performing with various orchestras and ensembles in Canada and the United States. He also started composing his own music, which was heavily influenced by his love for jazz and world music. In 1990, Reilly founded the group Sanctuary, which combined classical, jazz, and world music to create a unique sound. The group released several albums and toured extensively, gaining a loyal following of fans. One of Reilly's most significant achievements was his collaboration with the renowned composer and conductor John Tavener. In 1995, Tavener wrote a piece called "The Protecting Veil," which was specifically composed for Reilly and the Manitoba Chamber Orchestra. The piece was a huge success and received critical acclaim, earning Reilly international recognition. Reilly's collaboration with Tavener continued, and he went on to perform in several of the composer's works, including "The Veil of the Temple" and "Lament for Jerusalem." Reilly's performances with Tavener were widely praised for their emotional depth and technical skill. In addition to his work with Tavener, Reilly has collaborated with many other renowned composers and musicians, including Philip Glass, Steve Reich, and Meredith Monk. He has also performed with several orchestras, including the Toronto Symphony Orchestra, the National Arts Centre Orchestra, and the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra. Reilly has received numerous awards and accolades throughout his career. In 2000, he was awarded the Portia White Prize, which is given to outstanding Nova Scotian artists. He was also awarded the Queen's Golden Jubilee Medal in 2002 for his contributions to Canadian music. In recent years, Reilly has focused on producing and recording music. He has produced several albums for the ECM label, including "Sanctuary," which features his own compositions, and "The Protecting Veil," which features his collaboration with John Tavener.
