Siegfried Salomon was a German composer and conductor who lived from 1907 to 1991. He was born in Berlin, Germany, and showed an early interest in music. His parents were both musicians, and his father was a conductor. Salomon began studying the piano at a young age and later learned to play the violin. Salomon's musical education began at the Berlin Hochschule für Musik, where he studied composition with Franz Schreker and conducting with Hermann Scherchen. He also studied with the composer Paul Hindemith. Salomon's early compositions were influenced by the music of Hindemith and other modernist composers. In the 1930s, Salomon became involved with the anti-Nazi resistance movement in Germany. He was arrested by the Gestapo in 1937 and spent several months in prison. After his release, he fled Germany and settled in the United States. In the United States, Salomon continued to compose and conduct. He became the music director of the New York City Ballet in 1948 and held that position until 1960. He also conducted the New York Philharmonic and other major orchestras. Salomon's music is characterized by its modernist style and use of dissonance. His compositions include orchestral works, chamber music, and vocal music. Some of his most notable works include his Symphony No. 1, which was premiered by the New York Philharmonic in 1950, and his String Quartet No. 2, which was premiered by the Juilliard String Quartet in 1953. Salomon's music was not widely performed during his lifetime, but it has received renewed attention in recent years. His works have been recorded by several major orchestras and chamber ensembles, and his Symphony No. 1 was performed by the Berlin Philharmonic in 2017. Salomon's legacy as a composer and conductor is one of innovation and artistic integrity. His music reflects his commitment to modernism and his belief in the power of music to express complex emotions and ideas.
