Lev's parents recognized his potential and enrolled him in the Central Music School in Moscow, where he received formal training in violin. He continued his studies at the Moscow Conservatory, where he was mentored by some of the most prominent violinists of the time. Lev's dedication and hard work paid off, and he graduated with honors from the conservatory. After completing his studies, Lev began his professional career as a violinist. He quickly gained recognition for his exceptional talent and was invited to perform with some of the most prestigious orchestras in Russia. Lev's performances were always well-received, and he soon became a sought-after soloist. In 1974, Lev was invited to perform at the Tchaikovsky Competition, one of the most prestigious music competitions in the world. Lev's performances were always characterized by his technical mastery, musical sensitivity, and emotional depth. One of the highlights of Lev's career was his performance of Tchaikovsky's Violin Concerto with the London Symphony Orchestra in 1982. The performance was a critical and commercial success, and it cemented Lev's reputation as one of the world's leading violinists. Lev continued to perform with the London Symphony Orchestra throughout his career, and he developed a close relationship with the orchestra's conductor, Sir Colin Davis.
