He was the son of the composer Paul David and the pianist Gertrud David. His father was a prominent composer and conductor in Germany, and his mother was a well-known pianist who had studied with the famous pianist and composer Ferruccio Busoni. David grew up in a musical family and began playing the piano at a young age. He studied composition with his father and later with the composer Boris Blacher at the Berlin University of the Arts. He also studied conducting with Herbert von Karajan and worked as his assistant at the Berlin State Opera. David's early works were influenced by the music of his father and other German composers of the time, such as Hindemith and Stravinsky. His music was characterized by its clarity of form and structure, as well as its use of traditional tonality and harmony. In the 1950s, David began to experiment with serialism and other modernist techniques. His music became more complex and dissonant, but still retained its sense of clarity and structure. He also began to incorporate elements of jazz and popular music into his compositions. One of David's most famous works is his Symphony No. 3, which was premiered in 1962 by the Berlin Philharmonic under the direction of Herbert von Karajan. The symphony is a complex and challenging work that combines elements of serialism, jazz, and traditional tonality. It is considered one of the most important works of German post-war music. David also wrote a number of operas, including The Tower (1957), The Tempest (1961), and The Trial (1964). His operas were known for their innovative use of electronic music and their exploration of contemporary themes and issues. In addition to his work as a composer, David was also a respected conductor. He served as the music director of the Berlin State Opera from 1961 to 1963 and later conducted the Hamburg State Opera and the Frankfurt Opera. David continued to compose and conduct throughout his life, and his music remained influential in the world of contemporary classical music. He died on March 13, 2006, in Berlin at the age of 80.More....
