Kveta Novotna was a Czech soprano who was born on December 23, 1907, in Prague, Czechoslovakia. She was the daughter of a famous Czech opera singer, Karel Novotny, who was a member of the National Theatre in Prague. Novotna grew up in a musical family and began singing at a young age. She studied at the Prague Conservatory and made her debut at the National Theatre in 1925, at the age of 18. Novotna quickly gained recognition for her talent and was invited to perform in various opera houses across Europe. In 1928, she made her debut at the Royal Opera House in London, where she performed the role of Mimi in Puccini's La Boheme. Her performance was well-received, and she was invited to perform at the Metropolitan Opera in New York City in 1936. Novotna's performance at the Metropolitan Opera was a major highlight of her career. She performed the role of Musetta in La Boheme and received critical acclaim for her performance. She went on to perform in various other operas at the Metropolitan Opera, including The Magic Flute, Don Giovanni, and The Bartered Bride. Novotna also performed in various other opera houses across the world, including the Vienna State Opera, the Paris Opera, and the Teatro alla Scala in Milan. She was known for her powerful voice and her ability to convey emotion through her performances. In addition to her opera performances, Novotna also performed in concerts and recitals. She was known for her performances of Czech folk songs and was a champion of Czech music. She also performed works by other composers, including Mozart, Verdi, and Wagner. Novotna received numerous awards and honors throughout her career. In 1950, she was awarded the title of National Artist of Czechoslovakia. She was also awarded the Order of the White Lion, the highest honor in Czechoslovakia. In 1965, she was awarded the Gold Medal of the Royal Philharmonic Society in London. Novotna retired from performing in 1956 and went on to teach at the Prague Conservatory. She also served as the director of the National Theatre in Prague from 1964 to 1970.
