Mary Oleskiewicz is a renowned classical music artist who has made significant contributions to the world of music through her exceptional skills as a flutist, musicologist, and educator. Born in 1965 in the United States, Oleskiewicz grew up in a family of musicians, which played a significant role in shaping her musical career. Oleskiewicz's musical journey began at a young age when she started playing the flute. She showed exceptional talent and dedication to the instrument, which led her to pursue a career in music. She received her Bachelor of Music degree from the Eastman School of Music in 1987, where she studied with Bonita Boyd. She then went on to earn her Master of Music degree from the Yale School of Music in 1989, where she studied with Thomas Nyfenger. After completing her studies, Oleskiewicz embarked on a successful career as a flutist, performing with various orchestras and ensembles across the United States and Europe. She has performed with the Boston Symphony Orchestra, the Boston Pops Orchestra, the Handel and Haydn Society, and the Orchestra of St. Luke's, among others. She has also been a featured soloist with the New Haven Symphony Orchestra, the Rhode Island Philharmonic, and the Boston Classical Orchestra. In addition to her career as a performer, Oleskiewicz is also a respected musicologist and educator. She received her Ph.D. in musicology from Yale University in 1996, where she wrote her dissertation on the music of Johann Joachim Quantz. She has since published numerous articles and books on the music of the Baroque and Classical periods, including "Bach and the High Baroque" and "Quantz's 'Versuch'". She has also taught at various universities, including the University of Massachusetts Amherst, the University of Connecticut, and the University of Iowa. Oleskiewicz's exceptional skills as a flutist and musicologist have earned her numerous awards and accolades throughout her career. In 1990, she was awarded the prestigious Naumburg Award for Excellence in Chamber Music, which recognizes outstanding young musicians. She has also been a recipient of the Fulbright Fellowship, the American Council of Learned Societies Fellowship, and the National Endowment for the Humanities Fellowship. One of the highlights of Oleskiewicz's career was her performance at the Boston Early Music Festival in 2003. She performed as a soloist with the Boston Early Music Festival Orchestra, playing the flute concerto in D major by Johann Joachim Quantz. Her performance was widely praised for its technical brilliance and musical sensitivity, and it helped to cement her reputation as one of the leading Baroque flutists of her generation. Another notable performance by Oleskiewicz was her appearance at the National Flute Association Convention in 2010. She performed a program of Baroque and Classical music, including works by Bach, Handel, and Mozart. Her performance was met with enthusiastic applause from the audience, and it helped to showcase her exceptional skills as a performer and interpreter of early music. In addition to her performances and scholarly work, Oleskiewicz is also a dedicated educator. She is currently a professor of music at the University of Massachusetts Amherst, where she teaches courses in musicology and performance.
