Volker Bertelmann, better known by his stage name Hauschka, is a German pianist and composer who has gained international recognition for his unique approach to classical music. Born on August 23, 1966, in Ferndorf, Germany, Bertelmann grew up in a musical family and began playing the piano at a young age. He studied classical piano at the Music Academy in Cologne and later at the University of Music and Performing Arts in Vienna. Bertelmann's early career was focused on performing traditional classical music, but he soon became interested in exploring new sounds and techniques. He began experimenting with prepared piano, a technique in which objects are placed on or between the strings of the piano to alter its sound. This approach allowed Bertelmann to create a wide range of percussive and atmospheric sounds, and he soon began incorporating it into his compositions. In 2004, Bertelmann released his first album under the name Hauschka, titled "Substantial." The album was well-received by critics and showcased Bertelmann's unique approach to the piano. He continued to release albums over the next few years, including "The Prepared Piano" in 2005 and "Ferndorf" in 2008. Bertelmann's music gained wider recognition in 2012 when he composed the score for the film "Lion," which was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Original Score. The score featured Bertelmann's signature prepared piano sound, as well as orchestral elements and Indian instrumentation. The success of "Lion" led to more opportunities for Bertelmann to compose for film and television, including the HBO series "Patrick Melrose" and the film "Adrift." In addition to his work in film and television, Bertelmann has continued to release albums as Hauschka. His 2017 album "What If" was inspired by the idea of alternate realities and featured a more electronic sound than his previous work. The album received critical acclaim and was named one of the best albums of the year by several publications. Bertelmann's live performances are also highly regarded, as he incorporates visual elements and improvisation into his shows. He has performed at major festivals and venues around the world, including the Sydney Opera House, the Barbican Centre in London, and the Montreux Jazz Festival. Throughout his career, Bertelmann has received several awards and nominations for his work. In addition to the Academy Award nomination for "Lion," he has been nominated for several other film and television awards, including a Primetime Emmy Award for his work on "Patrick Melrose." He has also been recognized for his work as a musician, receiving the German Music Authors' Prize in 2014 and the German Record Critics' Award in 2017. Despite his success, Bertelmann remains committed to exploring new sounds and pushing the boundaries of classical music. He continues to experiment with prepared piano and other techniques, and his music remains a unique and innovative contribution to the world of classical music.
