The orchestra was founded in 1945 by a group of musicians who wanted to create a professional orchestra in the region. The ensemble has since grown to become one of the most respected orchestras in Austria and has performed all over the world. The orchestra's main members include its conductor, Gérard Korsten, and its concertmaster, Benjamin Schmid. Korsten has been the orchestra's conductor since 2011 and has led the ensemble in many successful performances.
