He was the son of a violinist and a pianist, and his parents recognized his musical talent at a young age. Weiss began playing the violin when he was just four years old, and he quickly became a prodigy. Weiss's parents were both immigrants from Eastern Europe, and they instilled in him a love of classical music from an early age. They encouraged him to pursue his passion for music, and he began taking lessons with some of the best violin teachers in New York City. As a teenager, Weiss won several prestigious music competitions, including the National Music Week Contest and the New York State Music Contest. He also performed with the New York Philharmonic and the NBC Symphony Orchestra, under the direction of Arturo Toscanini. In 1940, Weiss was awarded a scholarship to study at the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia. There, he studied with the legendary violinist Efrem Zimbalist, and he quickly established himself as one of the top students in the school. After graduating from Curtis, Weiss began his professional career as a soloist and chamber musician. He performed with some of the most renowned orchestras in the world, including the Berlin Philharmonic, the Vienna Philharmonic, and the London Symphony Orchestra. Weiss was known for his virtuosic playing and his ability to bring out the emotional depth of the music he performed. He was particularly renowned for his interpretations of the works of Bach, Mozart, and Beethoven. Throughout his career, Weiss received numerous awards and honors for his contributions to classical music. In 1956, he was awarded the Prix de Rome, one of the most prestigious awards in the music world. He was also a recipient of the National Medal of Arts, the highest honor given to artists by the United States government. In addition to his work as a performer, Weiss was also a respected teacher and mentor. He taught at the Juilliard School in New York City for many years, and he was known for his ability to inspire and guide young musicians. Weiss continued to perform and teach well into his 80s, and he remained an active and influential figure in the classical music world until his death in 2014.
