Fabien Lévy is a French composer who was born on October 28, 1968, in Paris, France. He grew up in a family of musicians, with his father being a composer and his mother a pianist. Lévy started playing the piano at a young age and later studied composition at the Paris Conservatory with Gérard Grisey and Emmanuel Nunes. Lévy's music is characterized by its complexity and use of microtonality. He often incorporates non-Western musical traditions into his compositions, such as Indian classical music and Arabic maqam. His works also frequently explore the relationship between sound and silence. One of Lévy's early works, "Mémoire de l'ombre," was written in 1993 and premiered at the Festival d'Automne in Paris. The piece is scored for a large ensemble and features a solo cello that plays microtonal intervals. The work was well-received and helped establish Lévy as a rising star in the contemporary classical music scene. In 1996, Lévy was awarded the Prix de Rome, which allowed him to spend two years studying in Rome. During this time, he composed several works, including "L'air du temps," which was premiered by the Ensemble Intercontemporain in 1998. The piece features a solo clarinet that plays microtonal intervals and is accompanied by a small ensemble. Lévy's music continued to gain recognition throughout the 2000s. In 2002, he was commissioned by the French government to compose a work for the bicentennial of the birth of Hector Berlioz. The resulting piece, "Les Nuits d'été," is a song cycle for soprano and orchestra that incorporates elements of Berlioz's music. In 2006, Lévy was commissioned by the Berlin Philharmonic to compose a work for their education program. The resulting piece, "L'homme qui plantait des arbres," is a chamber opera based on the book of the same name by Jean Giono. The opera tells the story of a man who spends his life planting trees and is set in a landscape that is gradually destroyed by war. Lévy's most recent works include "Mémoire de l'oubli," which was premiered by the Ensemble Intercontemporain in 2016, and "L'air du temps II," which was premiered by the Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France in 2018. Both works continue to explore Lévy's interest in microtonality and non-Western musical traditions. Overall, Fabien Lévy is a composer who has made significant contributions to the contemporary classical music scene. His works are known for their complexity and use of microtonality, as well as their incorporation of non-Western musical traditions. Lévy's music continues to be performed and recorded by ensembles around the world, and he remains an important figure in the world of contemporary classical music.
