Robert Bailey was born on May 12, 1985, in New York City. He grew up in a family of musicians, with his mother being a pianist and his father a cellist. From a young age, Bailey showed a natural talent for music, and his parents encouraged him to pursue his passion. Bailey began his formal music education at the age of six, when he started taking piano lessons. He quickly progressed and by the age of ten, he had already won several local competitions. At the age of twelve, Bailey started studying the violin, and he soon became proficient in both instruments. In 1998, Bailey was accepted into the Juilliard School's Pre-College Division, where he studied with renowned violinist Itzhak Perlman. During his time at Juilliard, Bailey won several competitions, including the prestigious Juilliard Concerto Competition, which allowed him to perform as a soloist with the Juilliard Orchestra. After graduating from Juilliard, Bailey continued his studies at the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia, where he studied with violinist Aaron Rosand. While at Curtis, Bailey won the school's Concerto Competition, which led to his debut performance with the Philadelphia Orchestra. Bailey's career as a soloist took off after his debut with the Philadelphia Orchestra. He began performing with major orchestras around the world, including the New York Philharmonic, the Boston Symphony Orchestra, and the London Symphony Orchestra. He also performed at major music festivals, such as the Tanglewood Music Festival and the Aspen Music Festival. In addition to his solo career, Bailey was also a sought-after chamber musician. He performed with some of the world's leading chamber ensembles, including the Emerson String Quartet and the Guarneri Quartet. He also collaborated with many of the world's leading pianists, including Emanuel Ax and Yefim Bronfman. Bailey's performances were praised for their technical brilliance and emotional depth. He was known for his ability to bring out the beauty and complexity of the music he played, and his performances were often described as "transcendent" and "mesmerizing." Throughout his career, Bailey received numerous awards and honors. In 2005, he was awarded the Avery Fisher Career Grant, which is given to outstanding young musicians who show exceptional promise for a career in classical music. He was also a recipient of the Gilmore Young Artist Award, which is given to pianists and violinists who show exceptional talent and promise. Bailey's recordings were also highly acclaimed. He recorded several albums for the Sony Classical label, including a recording of the Brahms Violin Concerto with the London Symphony Orchestra, which was praised for its "passionate and virtuosic" performance. Tragically, Bailey's career was cut short when he was diagnosed with a rare form of cancer in 2010. Despite undergoing extensive treatment, Bailey passed away on June 15, 2012, at the age of 27. Bailey's legacy lives on through his recordings and the memories of those who were fortunate enough to hear him perform. He was a true virtuoso and a gifted musician who left an indelible mark on the world of classical music.
