William Zinn was an American composer and conductor who was born on May 22, 1922, in New York City. He grew up in a musical family, with his father being a violinist and his mother a pianist. Zinn began playing the violin at a young age and showed a natural talent for music. He attended the Juilliard School of Music in New York City, where he studied composition and conducting. After graduating from Juilliard, Zinn began his career as a conductor, working with various orchestras throughout the United States. He also continued to compose music, and his works were performed by many orchestras, including the New York Philharmonic and the Boston Symphony Orchestra. One of Zinn's most famous works is his Symphony No. 1, which was premiered by the Boston Symphony Orchestra in 1955. The symphony is a powerful and emotional work that showcases Zinn's skill as a composer. It is a four-movement work that features lush orchestration and complex harmonies. Zinn's other notable works include his Piano Concerto, which was premiered by the New York Philharmonic in 1962, and his String Quartet No. 1, which was premiered by the Juilliard String Quartet in 1968. Both works showcase Zinn's ability to write music that is both technically challenging and emotionally engaging. Throughout his career, Zinn was known for his dedication to new music and his support of young composers. He was a mentor to many young musicians and composers, and he worked tirelessly to promote new music and encourage audiences to embrace it. Zinn passed away on December 10, 2009, at the age of 87.
