Andrew Van Allsburg was born on May 15, 1985, in Grand Rapids, Michigan. He grew up in a family of musicians, with both his parents being professional classical musicians. His father was a cellist, and his mother was a pianist. From a young age, Andrew was exposed to classical music and began playing the piano at the age of four. Andrew's parents recognized his talent and enrolled him in music lessons at a young age. He quickly excelled and began performing in local recitals and competitions. By the age of ten, Andrew had won several local and regional piano competitions. In 1997, Andrew was accepted into the prestigious Interlochen Arts Academy in Michigan. He studied under renowned pianist and teacher, Dr. Joseph Evans. During his time at Interlochen, Andrew continued to win competitions and perform in recitals. He also had the opportunity to perform with the Interlochen Symphony Orchestra. After graduating from Interlochen in 2003, Andrew attended the Juilliard School in New York City. He studied under the guidance of renowned pianist and teacher, Yoheved Kaplinsky. While at Juilliard, Andrew continued to win competitions and perform in recitals. He also had the opportunity to perform with the Juilliard Orchestra. In 2007, Andrew graduated from Juilliard with a Bachelor of Music degree. He then went on to pursue a Master of Music degree at the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia. At Curtis, Andrew studied under the guidance of renowned pianist and teacher, Gary Graffman. While at Curtis, Andrew continued to win competitions and perform in recitals. He also had the opportunity to perform with the Curtis Symphony Orchestra. In 2010, Andrew graduated from Curtis with a Master of Music degree. He then began his professional career as a concert pianist. Andrew has performed in major concert halls around the world, including Carnegie Hall in New York City, the Royal Albert Hall in London, and the Berlin Philharmonic in Germany. Andrew has also performed with some of the world's leading orchestras, including the New York Philharmonic, the London Symphony Orchestra, and the Berlin Philharmonic. He has collaborated with some of the world's leading conductors, including Gustavo Dudamel, Simon Rattle, and Valery Gergiev. In addition to his solo career, Andrew is also an avid chamber musician. He has performed with some of the world's leading chamber ensembles, including the Emerson String Quartet and the Guarneri String Quartet. Andrew has received numerous awards and accolades throughout his career. In 2009, he was awarded the Avery Fisher Career Grant, which is awarded to outstanding young musicians who show great potential for solo careers. In 2012, he was awarded the Gilmore Artist Award, which is awarded every four years to pianists who have demonstrated exceptional talent and musicianship. Andrew is also a dedicated teacher and has taught masterclasses at some of the world's leading music schools, including the Juilliard School and the Curtis Institute of Music. He is currently a faculty member at the New England Conservatory of Music in Boston. In addition to his performing and teaching career, Andrew is also a composer. He has written several pieces for solo piano and chamber ensembles, which have been performed around the world. Andrew Van Allsburg is widely regarded as one of the leading pianists of his generation.
