He grew up in a family of musicians, with his father being a professional pianist and his mother a violinist. From a young age, Ponto was exposed to classical music and began playing the cello at the age of six. Ponto's talent for the cello quickly became apparent, and he began studying with renowned cellist Yo-Yo Ma at the age of 12. Under Ma's tutelage, Ponto developed a deep understanding of the cello and its role in classical music. After completing his studies with Ma, Ponto attended the Juilliard School in New York City, where he studied with cellist Joel Krosnick. During his time at Juilliard, Ponto won several awards and competitions, including the prestigious Naumburg International Cello Competition. Following his graduation from Juilliard, Ponto began performing with some of the world's most renowned orchestras, including the New York Philharmonic, the Boston Symphony Orchestra, and the Berlin Philharmonic. He also began collaborating with other musicians, including pianist Lang Lang and violinist Joshua Bell. One of Ponto's most memorable performances was his solo debut with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra in 2001.
