His father was a music teacher, and Niemann began studying piano and composition at a young age. Niemann's musical education continued at the Leipzig Conservatory, where he studied with renowned composers such as Salomon Jadassohn and Carl Reinecke. He also studied with the pianist Ferruccio Busoni, who had a significant influence on Niemann's musical style. After completing his studies, Niemann worked as a music critic for several German newspapers and magazines. He also began composing his own music, which was heavily influenced by the Romantic tradition of composers such as Brahms and Schumann. Niemann's early works include piano pieces, songs, and chamber music. One of his most notable early works is his Piano Sonata in F-sharp minor, which was composed in 1901. One of his most famous works is his Symphony No. 1 in C minor, which was composed in 1910.
