The Xyrion Trio is a classical music ensemble that was founded in 2008. The trio consists of three members: pianist Liza Stepanova, violinist Ani Kavafian, and cellist Yves Dharamraj. The ensemble has gained recognition for their dynamic performances and unique interpretations of classical music. Liza Stepanova, the pianist of the Xyrion Trio, was born in Russia and began playing the piano at the age of six. She later moved to the United States to pursue her musical education, earning degrees from the Juilliard School and the Yale School of Music. Ani Kavafian, the violinist, was born in Istanbul, Turkey, and also studied at the Juilliard School. She has performed with numerous orchestras and ensembles, including the New York Philharmonic and the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center. Yves Dharamraj, the cellist, was born in New York City and studied at the Juilliard School and the New England Conservatory. He has performed with orchestras such as the Philadelphia Orchestra and the Los Angeles Philharmonic. The Xyrion Trio was formed when Stepanova, Kavafian, and Dharamraj met while studying at the Juilliard School. The trio takes its name from the Greek word "xýron," which means "sharp" or "keen." The ensemble's mission is to bring a fresh perspective to classical music and to engage audiences with their dynamic performances. Since its founding, the Xyrion Trio has performed at numerous venues and festivals around the world. In 2010, the trio made their debut at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C. They have also performed at the Ravinia Festival, the Caramoor Festival, and the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center. In 2012, the Xyrion Trio was invited to perform at the prestigious Marlboro Music Festival in Vermont, where they collaborated with renowned musicians such as Richard Goode and Mitsuko Uchida. The Xyrion Trio has also been recognized for their outstanding performances. In 2011, the trio won the prestigious Fischoff National Chamber Music Competition, which is one of the largest and most prestigious chamber music competitions in the world. They were also awarded the Grand Prize at the Coleman Chamber Music Competition in 2012. In addition to their performances, the Xyrion Trio is committed to education and outreach. They have conducted masterclasses and workshops at universities and music schools around the world, including the Juilliard School, the Yale School of Music, and the Royal Academy of Music in London. The trio is also involved in community outreach programs, bringing classical music to underserved communities and schools. The Xyrion Trio has recorded several albums, including their debut album, "Xyrion Trio: Live in Concert," which was released in 2011. The album features live recordings of the trio's performances at the Kennedy Center and the Caramoor Festival. Their second album, "Xyrion Trio: Schubert," was released in 2014 and features the trio's interpretations of Schubert's piano trios.
