Paul Richards, originally from Salt Lake City, Utah, began playing guitar at the age of 7. He studied classical guitar at the University of Utah and later moved to Los Angeles to pursue a career in music. Bert Lams, originally from Belgium, began playing guitar at the age of 12. He studied classical guitar at the Royal Conservatory of Music in Brussels and later moved to Los Angeles to study with renowned guitarist Christopher Parkening. Hideyo Moriya, originally from Tokyo, Japan, began playing guitar at the age of 12. He studied classical guitar at the Musashino Academia Musicae in Tokyo and later moved to Los Angeles to study with Christopher Parkening. The California Guitar Trio was formed when Paul Richards met Bert Lams at a guitar seminar in Los Angeles. The two began playing together and soon added Hideyo Moriya to the group. The trio began performing in local clubs and coffeehouses and quickly gained a following. They released their first album, "Yamanashi Blues," in 1993. The California Guitar Trio has since released over a dozen albums, including "Pathways," "Andromeda," and "Echoes." They have also collaborated with other musicians, including Tony Levin, Pat Mastelotto, and Adrian Belew of King Crimson. The group has toured extensively throughout the United States, Europe, and Asia, and has performed at major music festivals such as the Montreal Jazz Festival, the North Sea Jazz Festival, and the Glastonbury Festival. One of the highlights of the California Guitar Trio's career was their performance at the closing ceremony of the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta, Georgia. The trio performed their arrangement of "The Star-Spangled Banner" in front of a global audience of millions. They have also performed on several television shows, including "The Tonight Show with Jay Leno" and "CBS This Morning." The California Guitar Trio has received several awards and accolades throughout their career. They were named "Best Acoustic Guitar Band" by Guitar Player magazine in 1998 and have been nominated for several Grammy Awards. They were also awarded the Indie Award for "Best Live Performance Album" in 2002.
