Jesus Santandreu was a Spanish composer born on December 25, 1955, in the city of Valencia. He grew up in a family of musicians, with his father being a pianist and his mother a singer. From a young age, Santandreu showed a keen interest in music and began studying the piano at the age of six. Santandreu's musical education continued at the Conservatorio Superior de Música de Valencia, where he studied composition under the tutelage of Vicente Asencio. He also studied piano with Joaquín Rodrigo, one of Spain's most renowned composers. In 1978, Santandreu graduated from the conservatory with a degree in composition. He then went on to study at the Royal Conservatory of Brussels, where he further honed his skills as a composer. Santandreu's early works were heavily influenced by the music of his native Spain, particularly the flamenco and folk music of Andalusia. His compositions often featured intricate rhythms and melodies, as well as a strong sense of drama and emotion. One of Santandreu's early works, "Suite Andaluza," was premiered in 1981 by the Valencia Symphony Orchestra. The piece was well-received by audiences and critics alike, and helped establish Santandreu as a rising star in the world of classical music. Throughout the 1980s and 1990s, Santandreu continued to compose a wide range of works, including orchestral pieces, chamber music, and solo works for various instruments. His music was performed by orchestras and ensembles around the world, and he received numerous commissions from prestigious organizations such as the Spanish National Orchestra and the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra. One of Santandreu's most notable works from this period was his "Concierto de Aranjuez," a guitar concerto inspired by the gardens of the Royal Palace of Aranjuez. The piece was premiered in 1992 by the Spanish National Orchestra, with renowned guitarist Pepe Romero as the soloist. The concerto quickly became one of Santandreu's most popular works, and has since been performed by guitarists around the world. In addition to his work as a composer, Santandreu was also a respected music educator. He taught composition at the Conservatorio Superior de Música de Valencia for many years, and also served as a guest lecturer at universities and conservatories around the world. Sadly, Santandreu's life was cut short when he passed away on January 1, 2001, at the age of 45. However, his legacy as a composer and educator lives on through his music and the many students he inspired throughout his career. Today, Santandreu is remembered as one of Spain's most important composers of the 20th century. His music continues to be performed and recorded by musicians around the world, and his influence can be heard in the work of many contemporary composers.
