He was born into a family of musicians, and his father was a violinist in the Kiev Opera Orchestra. Joseph showed an early interest in music and began playing the violin at the age of six. He received his first lessons from his father and later studied with renowned violinists such as David Oistrakh and Nathan Milstein. In 1939, Joseph and his family fled Ukraine due to the outbreak of World War II and settled in the United States. He continued his music education at the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia, where he studied with Efrem Zimbalist. He graduated from the institute in 1944 and began his professional career as a violinist. Joseph Stepansky quickly gained recognition as a talented musician and performed with some of the most prestigious orchestras in the world. He made his debut with the New York Philharmonic in 1945 and went on to perform with the Boston Symphony Orchestra, the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, and the London Symphony Orchestra, among others. One of the highlights of Joseph's career was his performance of Tchaikovsky's Violin Concerto with the New York Philharmonic in 1951. The performance was highly acclaimed, and Joseph received a standing ovation from the audience. He went on to perform the concerto with many other orchestras throughout his career. In addition to his performances as a soloist, Joseph was also a member of the Juilliard String Quartet from 1955 to 1960. The quartet was known for its innovative interpretations of classical music and was highly regarded by critics and audiences alike. Throughout his career, Joseph Stepansky received numerous awards and honors for his contributions to classical music. In 1952, he was awarded the Walter W. Naumburg Foundation Award, which is given to outstanding young musicians. He was also a recipient of the Prix de Rome, which is awarded to artists who show exceptional talent in their field. Joseph Stepansky retired from performing in 1986 but continued to teach and mentor young musicians. He was a professor of violin at the Juilliard School from 1960 to 1991 and also taught at the Manhattan School of Music and the Curtis Institute of Music. Joseph Stepansky passed away on December 28, 2006, at the age of 85. He left behind a legacy as one of the most talented and respected violinists of his time.
