Jacques Marcel Murgier was a French composer born on January 12, 1922, in Paris, France. He was the son of a music teacher and grew up in a musical family. His father taught him to play the piano at a young age, and he quickly showed a talent for music. Murgier went on to study at the Paris Conservatory, where he studied composition with Olivier Messiaen and Nadia Boulanger. Murgier's early works were heavily influenced by the music of his teachers, but he soon developed his own unique style. His music was characterized by its use of complex rhythms and harmonies, as well as its incorporation of elements from jazz and other popular music genres. One of Murgier's most famous works is his Piano Concerto No. 1, which he composed in 1950. The concerto is known for its virtuosic piano writing and its use of jazz-inspired rhythms and harmonies. It has been performed by many of the world's leading pianists, including Martha Argerich and Vladimir Ashkenazy. Murgier also composed a number of chamber works, including several string quartets and a piano trio. His String Quartet No. 1, composed in 1955, is particularly notable for its use of extended techniques, such as col legno and sul ponticello. In addition to his work as a composer, Murgier was also a respected music educator. He taught at the Paris Conservatory for many years, and his students included several notable composers, such as Pierre Boulez and Henri Dutilleux. Murgier continued to compose and teach until his death on December 22, 2001, at the age of 79. His music remains an important part of the classical music repertoire, and his influence can be heard in the work of many contemporary composers.
