Marilú Niño Prieto was a Mexican classical music composer born on May 5, 1950, in Mexico City. She was the youngest of three siblings and grew up in a family that valued music and the arts. Her father was a painter, and her mother was a pianist who taught her how to play the piano at a young age. Prieto's love for music grew as she got older, and she began composing her own pieces when she was just a teenager. She studied music at the National Conservatory of Music in Mexico City, where she learned composition, piano, and music theory. She also studied at the University of California, Los Angeles, where she earned a master's degree in music composition. Prieto's music was heavily influenced by Mexican folk music and culture. She often incorporated traditional Mexican instruments, such as the maracas and the guitar, into her compositions. Her music was also influenced by the works of other classical composers, such as Beethoven and Mozart. Prieto's first major composition was a piano concerto that she wrote when she was just 19 years old. The concerto was well-received by audiences and critics alike, and it helped establish Prieto as a talented young composer. She went on to compose many other works, including symphonies, chamber music, and operas. One of Prieto's most famous works is her opera, "La Malinche." The opera tells the story of the indigenous woman who served as a translator and advisor to the Spanish conquistador Hernán Cortés during the conquest of Mexico. The opera was praised for its beautiful music and powerful storytelling, and it helped establish Prieto as one of Mexico's most important composers. Prieto's music was also known for its political and social commentary. She often used her music to address issues such as poverty, inequality, and political corruption. Her music was seen as a way to give voice to the marginalized and oppressed in Mexican society. Prieto continued to compose music throughout her life, even as she battled health problems. She died on December 22, 2018, at the age of 68. Her legacy as a composer and musician lives on, and her music continues to inspire and move audiences around the world.
