Hwayoon Lee is a South Korean classical music artist who has made a name for herself as a violist. Born on December 12, 1992, in Seoul, South Korea, Hwayoon Lee grew up in a family of musicians. Her father was a violinist, and her mother was a pianist. From a young age, Hwayoon Lee was exposed to classical music and began playing the violin at the age of four. However, she soon switched to the viola, which she found to be a more expressive and versatile instrument. Hwayoon Lee's talent as a violist was evident from an early age. She won her first competition at the age of six and went on to win numerous awards and accolades throughout her childhood and teenage years. In 2005, she won first prize at the Korea Times Music Competition, and in 2006, she won first prize at the Ewha-Kyunghyang Competition. These early successes paved the way for a career in music, and Hwayoon Lee began to attract attention from music schools and conservatories around the world. In 2008, Hwayoon Lee moved to the United States to study at the Juilliard School in New York City. There, she studied with renowned violists such as Heidi Castleman and Misha Amory and honed her skills as a performer and musician. During her time at Juilliard, Hwayoon Lee won several awards and competitions, including the Juilliard Concerto Competition and the William Primrose International Viola Competition. After graduating from Juilliard in 2012, Hwayoon Lee began to establish herself as a soloist and chamber musician. She has performed with orchestras around the world, including the Seoul Philharmonic Orchestra, the New York Philharmonic, and the London Symphony Orchestra. She has also collaborated with some of the world's most renowned musicians, including Yo-Yo Ma, Itzhak Perlman, and Pinchas Zukerman. One of Hwayoon Lee's most notable performances was her debut with the New York Philharmonic in 2014. She performed the Walton Viola Concerto under the baton of conductor Alan Gilbert, receiving critical acclaim for her "rich, warm tone" and "impeccable technique." The performance was a turning point in Hwayoon Lee's career, cementing her reputation as one of the world's leading violists. In addition to her work as a soloist, Hwayoon Lee is also an accomplished chamber musician. She has performed with some of the world's most prestigious chamber music ensembles, including the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center and the Marlboro Music Festival. She is also a founding member of the Hwaum Chamber Orchestra, a group of young Korean musicians dedicated to promoting classical music in Korea and around the world. In addition to her wins at the Juilliard Concerto Competition and the William Primrose International Viola Competition, she has also won the Young Concert Artists International Auditions and the Avery Fisher Career Grant.
