Born on August 22, 1943, in Salt Lake City, Utah, Staheli grew up in a family of musicians. His father was a choir director, and his mother was a pianist. From a young age, Staheli was exposed to music and began playing the piano at the age of five. Staheli's passion for music continued to grow throughout his childhood, and he went on to study music at Brigham Young University, where he earned a Bachelor of Music degree in 1966. He then went on to pursue a Master of Music degree at the University of Utah, where he studied composition with Vladimir Ussachevsky and choral conducting with Newell B. Weight. After completing his studies, Staheli began his career as a composer and conductor. He served as the director of choral activities at the University of Utah from 1970 to 1976, and then went on to serve as the director of choral activities at Brigham Young University from 1976 to 2004. During his tenure at Brigham Young University, Staheli established himself as one of the leading choral conductors in the country, and his choirs received numerous awards and accolades. Staheli's compositions are known for their intricate harmonies and lush textures. He has written works for choir, orchestra, and chamber ensembles, and his music has been performed by some of the world's leading orchestras and choirs. Some of his most notable works include "The Lord Bless You and Keep You," "Come, Thou Fount of Every Blessing," and "O Love That Will Not Let Me Go." In addition to his work as a composer, Staheli is also a respected conductor.
