Born on August 1, 1938, in Donnycarney, Dublin, Moloney grew up in a musical family and was exposed to traditional Irish music from a young age. His father played the flute and his mother sang, and he learned to play the tin whistle and the uilleann pipes as a child. Moloney's passion for traditional Irish music led him to form The Chieftains in 1962, along with fellow musicians Sean Potts, Michael Tubridy, Martin Fay, and David Fallon. The group's unique blend of traditional Irish music with other genres, such as classical and rock, quickly gained popularity and they went on to become one of the most successful and influential Irish music groups of all time. Over the course of his career, Moloney has collaborated with a wide range of musicians and artists, including Van Morrison, Sting, and The Rolling Stones. He has also composed music for films, including the Academy Award-winning movie, "Barry Lyndon." One of the highlights of Moloney's career was his performance at the White House for President Barack Obama in 2011. The Chieftains played a selection of traditional Irish music, including "The Foggy Dew" and "The Rocky Road to Dublin," and Moloney was presented with the Presidential Distinguished Service Award for his contributions to Irish music and culture. Moloney has received numerous awards and honors throughout his career, including six Grammy Awards and an honorary doctorate from Trinity College Dublin. In 2018, he was inducted into the Irish America Hall of Fame. Despite his many achievements, Moloney remains dedicated to preserving and promoting traditional Irish music.
